Are peas a complete protein?
Green peas and pea protein are near-complete protein sources, but they are slightly low in one essential amino acid: methionine. Peas contain generous amounts of eight other essential amino acids—including lysine, leucine, and valine—which support muscle synthesis and tissue repair.
Because pea protein is slightly deficient in methionine, it is often paired with rice protein or hemp protein in plant-based blends. Rice protein is rich in methionine but lower in lysine, creating a complementary full protein profile equal to whey or egg protein. Eating a varied plant diet throughout the day easily meets all essential amino acid needs.
