Can cats drink coconut water?
Cats should not drink coconut water. While tiny licks of pure coconut water are unlikely to be toxic, coconut water contains high concentrations of potassium and sodium. Excessive potassium intake can disrupt a cat’s delicate electrolyte balance, potentially causing hyperkalemia, which can lead to heart arrhythmias or muscle weakness.
Furthermore, cats have no metabolic need for plant-based electrolyte drinks. Plain, fresh water is all your cat requires for proper hydration. If your cat shows interest in drinking coconut water, offer fresh water or pet-safe bone broth instead to avoid digestive upset or electrolyte imbalances.
