Does blue spirulina have a taste?
Blue spirulina technically possesses a very faint mineral flavor, but in practical kitchen applications, it is virtually tasteless. It is produced by isolating phycocyanin from green spirulina algae, leaving behind the green chlorophyll responsible for the strong, swampy, and salty taste of whole spirulina.
If you sample raw blue spirulina powder straight on your tongue or mixed into plain water, you may notice a very mild, neutral mineral trace. However, as soon as you mix it into fruit smoothies, oatmeal, plant-based yogurt, or baked recipes, any underlying hint vanishes completely. Natural flavors like vanilla, fruit, or maple easily overpower the subtle powder. This tasteless quality makes blue spirulina ideal for adding vibrant ocean-blue hues to smoothies, frostings, and desserts without changing how the finished dish tastes.
